The Sonics - Boom (1966)
Notes: Generally, I try to be accepting and understanding of other people’s opinions on music and that I might feel differently than they do. However, with The Sonics I draw the line - they were, without question, the epitome of everything a Garage Rock band should be, and I will murder anyone who says otherwise. Or at least argue very aggressively. To my mind they were easily the best Garage Rock band, and quite possibly the very first honest to god punk band. A band who was not particularly successful in their day, never extending beyond their local music scene in Tacoma, WA, they have built up a steady fan base of devotees since then, including but not limited to many people in far more famous bands, based purely on the incredible emotional quality of their recordings. All I can say is that when Gerry says something, he MEANS it, and when he shouts something he REALLY MEANS IT, down to every fiber of his being and you can hear that in their music.
“The Sonics recorded very, very cheaply on a two track you know, and they just used one microphone over the drums, and they got the most amazing drum sound I’ve ever heard. Still to this day, it’s still my favorite drum sound. It sounds like he’s hitting harder than anyone I’ve ever known.” - Kurt Cobain
For fans of: Garage Rock, early Kinks, early punk rock, Monks, “Strange House”, LCD Soundsystem (yea, you know in ‘Losing My Edge’ when he keeps repeating The Sonics over and over? This is why.), early The Who, The White Stripes, The Fall, John Peel, music with soul, 60s music
