Secret Machines - The Road Leads Where It’s Led EP (2005)
Notes: This was the EP that made me fall in love with Secret Machines, and although they had some good albums too this is still the high water mark of their career for me. Grand, sweeping psychedelia to lure you to sleep or make you ponder the complexities of life. It’s half made up of covers, something I think helps rather than hurts it as Secret Machine’s versions of these songs are gorgeously unrecognizable from the originals, taking the classic R&B number Money (That’s What I Want) and turning it into a lengthy ambient soundscape is not only brilliant and beautiful, but it turns the lyrics on their head and makes you question how he really feels.
For fans of: Psychedelia, really good cover versions, smoking pot
